Albums

Before Toto was formed, members of the band played session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. The group's collaboration led to the formation of Toto in the year 1976.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album, was criticized by critics for lacking hit singles. In 1985 the group's singer Fergie Frederiksen left the group, and the group held auditions for a new frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.

Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the band. The band went through old recordings and tapes to create the special record. The album was well-loved by fans and the band embarked upon the tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

In 1985, Fergie Frederiksen, Toto's drummer, quit the group for personal reasons. Toto decided to hold an audition, and eventually selected Joseph Williams to replace Frederiksen.
Prior to and during the creation of Toto the members performed sessions for a variety of artists. Toto was formed after Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and Boz Scaggs recorded Silk Degrees. Paich played keyboards on Steely Dan records, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
